THE GOODS AND BADS OF REPLACING YOUR WINDOWS YOURSELF

I like to do a lot of things myself, without the assistance of anyone else. Redecorating my living room, repurposing old furniture (it really isn’t that hard, but you do need to purchase a sander), repainting my Palo Alto, CA, home… Do-it-yourself projects can be a fun time and a good excuse to invite some friends over for a “BBQ and DIY” weekend.

But, when the time comes to install replacement windows in your home, it may be a better idea to turn to the professionals. Unless you are an expert (or unless you will be working with an expert who just so happens to be part of your family), consider these pros and cons of a DIY window project that our team here at The Screen Shop has created just for you:

At your own pace (pro)
When you oversee your own project, you are exclusively in charge of the timeline. You can take as long as you want and no one can say anything to you about it.

It takes a LONG time (con)
Yes, you can take as long as you want to do your project. But, consider that a single window install takes a pro between 2-3 hours to replace. And, then, evaluate how long you—the non-pro—may take to complete an installation.

Difficulty level: 10 (con)
Replacing windows is a big job. And, it can be a hazardous one, particularly in a multi-story structure. If you are considering a DIY replacement window project, please consider the following hazards:

– If your home is multi-story, ladders will be involved. A lot.
– Power tools are needed. Are you familiar with how to use them?
– No two window replacement jobs are the same—you do not know what is behind those walls…

It’s cheaper to do it yourself (pro)
You are your own free labor. If you can talk your friends into joining you, even cheaper!

It’s only cheaper if nothing goes wrong (con)
If you break it, you buy it. When a professional installs your windows, he/she is responsible for any breaks or damage to the windows and to your home, during the installation process.

Self-satisfaction (pro)
There is an unmatched level of satisfaction which comes with the DIY project, wouldn’t you agree? Upon completion and for years to come, you can point and say, “I did that. I created that look myself.” Now, there is, of course, satisfaction in working with a professional, too—but, it isn’t quite as fulfilling.

There is no warranty on your work (con)
Unfortunately, if you DIY your own replacement windows, they won’t have the same warranties as you would have with a professional: workmanship and manufacturer. Because you aren’t a licensed installation expert, the quality of the installation can not be verified or insured and, thus, the manufacturer’s warranty is likely null.

So, what do you think? If you have made the smart decision to hire a professional for your Palo Alto, CA windows replacement project, we applaud you. And, we hope you call us here at The Screen Shop to assist! Find us on the web to learn more about the services we provide.
